we’re taking the time it takes.
while we do that (and trust me that’s all we do), we dont want to spend time making trailers, or writing blog posts.
we’re not interested in development transparency, we’re interested in development, period.
also, fez is a game about exploration and discovery.
unlike every other game out there we’re keeping our cards very close to our vest. you’ve only seen maybe 5% of what the game has to offer in terms of art styles, mechanics and environments, we want you to have a LOT of surprises when playing fez,
we did not want to, and could not sustain close to 3 years of press and media releases. yeah, information is scarce, that’s because we’re busy making the game. i dont think people realize the effort that goes into sustaining a community or a real development blog. look at wolfire. they have TWO FULL TIME PR guys taking care of stuff like that and the humble indie bundle. im the only PR guy, im also the only artist and only designer. you want me to make the game, or entertain you while you wait?
so while we do this, we ask you to please either bare with us while we pour all our blood sweat ad tears in this labor of love, or kindly go fuck yourself with your fez nukem forever shit.
For my money, it doesn’t help that you tell your fans to fuck off or to fuck themselves on every single one of your blog posts. Maybe you don’t have two full-time PR guys, but it costs nothing to be polite.
The FAQ was all I would have needed to fuel my anticipation for this game forever, but that response in the comments is enough to show me, how do they say these days? “That you’re for real”?
Anyway, I guess I now see the difference between a big video game company not delivering and you pouring your heart and soul into Fez. Also, sorry for that Nukem Forever remark, it seems to have hit a nerve or two
I really appreciate you clearing the table and saying what’s what. So again, thank you Fish, thank you Renaud, for making a Yes Game. In that sense, let the anticipation continue!
“or kindly go fuck yourself with your fez nukem forever shit.”
Remarks like that to your prospective fanbase are frankly uncalled for & reinforces the fact that you really need some decent PR. How can you expect to make money from your art if you consistently belittle & utter profanities at the fans? Arrogance & pretentiousness, which you seem to have in aplomb will not serve you well within these comments sections, perhaps being a little more respectful in the future would be more appropriate.
Art is afterall subjective & thus as an artist you should be able to accept the inevitable crticisms from the outsider (it’s part of the creative process unfortunately). I still look forward to the eventual release of FEZ but it is tainted somewhat by the remarks from Fish (as I’m sure many will agree) all we ask is for periodic updates of FEZ’s progress, not to be thrown profanities & be “entertained” as you so arrogantly put it. Stick to what you do best Fish, making games, business does not suit you…
I must admit I was expecting a more substantial response, it would seem I was asking for too much, nevermind… This project must be a true labour of love for you & your team & not a means to make at least some money, art is business afterall.
Personally Tuhd agrees with Fish’s reaction. I’d react dat way too if people kept pushing the issue like they was owed something. Entitlement mentality FTL
Ha…I love how the Internet/computers/distance warps social interactions.
Eh. I was gonna say something about saying mean things and forgiveness and friends and people and who cares and fez is cool and I’m a little bit excited. But. Ehnaaa… Everyone else can talk.
“If you don’t do something cool as Fez, you should STFU.”
In the same time that FEZ has been in development, I’ve managed to develop, program, art direct, publish, market/promote, self fund etc… 2 games for XBLA & 1 for iPad (said 3 games have also yielded an ample return in profit). Don’t see this as a way of me getting at the FEZ team (which I have the utmost repect for), I’m simply stating that time is not an excuse for the desire of productivity & know from first-hand experience the development cycle & workload demand for indie created games. It’s certainly not an excuse to continually berate the fanbase…
i think a lot of people are aware of the game (having been in development for so long), but i also think a vast majority of these people have NO IDEA what its about. perspective changing or something? its not an easy game to explain in words, and the art isnt fully appreciated until you see it in action.
so yeah, video coverage is something im happy to hear is not coming.
I just can’t get it. Showing off development screenshots to the fans is about the coolest thing in indie gamedev! This is what I sourced inspiration from when I tried making my own games.
Fish, cursing at your fans made me respect you more. There is no sarcasm there. Fans are fucking entitled assholes and are best ignored. Just do your thing, take your time, and make sure it’s fucking AWESOME!
Honestly, if I were the kind who worked head-down and wanted to take all the time, etc. the way Fish seems to be (so far, I tend to half-finish something, and then put it on Git Hub publicly), I think I’d just make it a point to make a post every 2 or 3 months that said, “We’re still working on it. Don’t worry.” or similar and then never read the comment threads. That is perhaps terrible advice, though, since I’m not that kind of person. What do I know?
what would you do if your son was at home, cryin all alone on the bedroom floor cos he’s hungry, and the only way to feed him is to sleep with a man for a little bit o money??
Jimmy_James, your ideas about artists are delusional and were quite obviously formed while floating (in an uninteresting and excessively polite sort of way) in the middle of some variety of history/reality vacuum.
Also, Ben Hammill, re: “I think I’d just make it a point to make a post every 2 or 3 months that said, ‘We’re still working on it. Don’t worry.’”
This is what most people do, which is also why most of those people are boring and unoriginal. It’s precisely by having an actual personality to go with his talent that Phil has built a reputation for himself, and continues to be invited to speak at large events, despite never having completed or released any of his (arguably) most interesting projects.
He’s interesting. Sometimes he’s a dick. He can afford to be. Most people can’t. Generally, they can’t because they don’t think that they can.
The box over Gomez’s head is kind of ugly.

Also just saw that Donald mentioned this as well. So I’ll be the second on to tell you to get your head on straight.
Pardon, Mr.Fish, is it? Is the game really canceled? I’ve been so stoked to play it since I saw it two years ago, and have been following up on it ever since.
Sorry to bother you, just a fan wanting to know if there’s still hope
@Fish
“fez is a game about exploration and discovery.

Tuhd are bored, so felt like pointing something out. It be the word “OR”.
“so while we do this, we ask you to please either bare with us while we pour all our blood sweat ad tears in this labor of love, or kindly go fuck yourself with your fez nukem forever shit.”
If you bare with the Fez team, you no have to fuck self. Not sure why peoples got uptights about it. Seem like logical choice.
I mean, unless you are entitlemented douchebag, then maybe you mights be offended.
Look at this. Who needs a bigger update when there is this much controversy. He posted like 4 sentences, obviously enough for it to spark discussion. Also neat game.
let’s face it, we’re all just jealous that phil has been able to work on this game for 3 years instead of getting his soul crushed by a large corporation or perhaps by a renegade bus while you’re walking to the corner store to buy some beer.
nope. hadnt even crossed my mind, really.
i dont think it would be all that great.
fez is a 2D game. you’d almost never see anything popping out of there.
you only ever get glimpses at the 3rd dimension.
So there I was back in January reading an article about the most anticipated games of 2010, (http://www.avclub.com/articles/froth-of-anticipation-the-av-clubs-2010-firsthalf,37156/) when I spot in the list a little game called Fez. So I think to myself, “this looks like a game I would purchase and enjoy.” Months go by and I honestly completely forget about it.
Until today when the game randomly jumps back into memory. Knowing it hasn’t come out yet despite an “early 2010″ release date, I search the interwebs for an update. I ultimately find myself here, where instead of a simple update on the game, I am instructed to “kindly go fuck yourself.” What? Yes, comparing a game that’s been in development for a couple of years to a game that took 10 years to be canceled is an extreme hyperbole, but I didn’t make those comments. Nor was I expecting a new trailer and complete developmental transparency. I just wanted information about what was happening with a game that I was genuinely excited about.
I don’t feel as though I’m owed a game, or anything really. But a promise was broken, doesn’t that at least warrant an explanation, preferably an explanation that doesn’t include the phrase, “go fuck yourself”? This game should be the best it can be, even if that means years of development. However, it doesn’t take a full-time PR guy to understand that there might be confusion when Christmas comes and there are no presents. My feelings aren’t hurt by the comment above, I just think it’s insulting to the people who want to see the fruit of your labor just as much as you do. You don’t owe your fans a game, but at the same time they don’t owe you their admiration.
For my money, it doesn’t help that you tell your fans to fuck off or to fuck themselves on every single one of your blog posts. Maybe you don’t have two full-time PR guys, but it costs nothing to be polite.”
Well, he said kindly. Maybe there’ll be soft music, scented oils, hand lotion… That sort of thing.
There is no way to put “go fuck yourself” politely, Fish sounds like a completely self centered arrogant ignoramus. It’s a real shame his game looks good though, otherwise I would have said goodbye to this blog long ago. Best keep your mouth shut in the future Fish & keep to what you do best.
Now back to the computer & finish the god damn game!
How can I help him? I wish I could. But instead i’ll just come here and be a fucking dick.
Wow, maybe i should re-consider how i use my time and energy.
Maybe i *should* go fuck myself.
I see what you did there, not very fair changing my original post from,
“How can I help him? I wish I could. How about some tape for his mouth”
to the edited version you posted,
“How can I help him? I wish I could. But instead i’ll just come here and be a fucking dick.
Wow, maybe i should re-consider how i use my time and energy.
Maybe i *should* go fuck myself.”
Very underhand & a warning to future posters on this blog, your comments may be changed if they do not agree with the staff of Polytron.
Felix Da Mouse Cat is right. You really should put a disclaimer on top of the page:
“You’re free to post and say anything, but please be aware that extreme stupidity can and will be ridiculed to the point of, well, ridicule?”
Maybe a “please stay around and be dicks” will make sure that what appears to be most of your fanbase won’t be put off by your obvious extreme lack of sense of entitlement. If anything, Fish, you should be our slave for the rest of your days and thank us for that.
but felix didnt say dat. Robotochan did. Unless he’s gonna start sock-puppetting.
And considering the commentary previous to the changed statement from Robotochan, he brought it on himself. But hey, it’s the internet. We get to pretend the world revolves around us here.
I was so sad when spring 2010 came and went. I’ve been eagerly awaiting Fez’s release but, man, is it killing me. I just kind of wish there was some other positive news other than “it’s still in development and not dead.” =(
I hope the game development is on the good slide.
After having discovered great games on the XBLA (Braid, Winterbottom and now Limbo), i’m really excited by Fez (or Fedge? I am not sure which one is the final name).
Hope you will meet such a success as the other independant games mentionned in the first paragraph.
I understand it is hard to work with really limited resources, but can’t you receive the financial help of an editor, maybe to hire an additional programmer for example?
Lot of people are buzzing around Fez, so maybe you could give us some meat to share about the game? Are you near the end of the develoment? What is not finished yet in the development process, what must be improved, …?

June 9th, 2010 at 06:44
@Jimmy_James
“In the same time that FEZ has been in development, I’ve managed to develop, program, art direct, publish, market/promote, self fund etc… 2 games for XBLA & 1 for iPad…”
What happened to subjectivity?
“I reiterate that art is purely subjective…”
June 9th, 2010 at 07:04
I forgot to add this bit too:
“I’m simply stating that time is not an excuse for the desire of productivity & know from first-hand experience the development cycle & workload demand for indie created games.”
Also just saw that Donald mentioned this as well. So I’ll be the second on to tell you to get your head on straight.

Im awsome at PR LOL jk i work at polytron.

June 10th, 2010 at 05:46
Two things:
a) This game looks awesome, can’t wait.
b) That’s all that’s really worth saying. Thank you for putting your time into this.

Pardon, Mr.Fish, is it? Is the game really canceled? I’ve been so stoked to play it since I saw it two years ago, and have been following up on it ever since.
Sorry to bother you, just a fan wanting to know if there’s still hope
June 13th, 2010 at 13:20
Perfect update by Fish:
@Fish
“fez is a game about exploration and discovery.
unlike every other game out there we’re keeping our cards very close to our vest. you’ve only seen maybe 5% of what the game has to offer in terms of art styles, mechanics and environments, we want you to have a LOT of surprises when playing fez.
we did not want to, and could not sustain close to 3 years of press and media releases. yeah, information is scarce, that’s because we’re busy making the game.”
June 14th, 2010 at 04:27
Tuhd are bored, so felt like pointing something out.
I mean, unless you are entitlemented douchebag, then maybe you mights be offended.
lets hear it for contexts.
June 14th, 2010 at 13:16
CONTEXTS!
This comment thread could be the plot of an MTV show. STOP IT.

Q:Any E3 announcements?
June 17th, 2010 at 18:07
A: Plenty. XBox 360 slim, new Zelda, new Kid Icarus game, Nintendo 3DS, tons of trailers… just nothing concerning Polytron in any way
June 18th, 2010 at 10:04
Look at this. Who needs a bigger update when there is this much controversy. He posted like 4 sentences, obviously enough for it to spark discussion. Also neat game.
June 19th, 2010 at 00:37
let’s face it, we’re all just jealous that phil has been able to work on this game for 3 years instead of getting his soul crushed by a large corporation or perhaps by a renegade bus while you’re walking to the corner store to buy some beer.
now where were we?
June 19th, 2010 at 10:40
Are you considering bringin Fez to the Nintendo 3DS platform? The 2D/3D effects featured in Fez seem like they’d be great for it.
June 20th, 2010 at 12:01
nope. hadnt even crossed my mind, really.
i dont think it would be all that great.
fez is a 2D game. you’d almost never see anything popping out of there.
you only ever get glimpses at the 3rd dimension.
June 22nd, 2010 at 12:26
Keep up the good work guys, I am really looking forward to Fez, have been since I ever saw it for the first time.
June 23rd, 2010 at 19:51
So there I was back in January reading an article about the most anticipated games of 2010, (http://www.avclub.com/articles/froth-of-anticipation-the-av-clubs-2010-firsthalf,37156/) when I spot in the list a little game called Fez.
June 24th, 2010 at 20:55
“You don’t owe your fans a game, but at the same time they don’t owe you their admiration.”
Tuhd think that is point of what Fish said. Game not released, so nobody owe anyone anything. Game will speak for itself.
also, contexts. As you said, you didn’t make those comments. No fuck for you.

July 8th, 2010 at 11:38
I will definitely buy this game
July 8th, 2010 at 17:50
I have a feeling that I’ll be too old for games when this comes out, Pity really…
July 8th, 2010 at 17:59
@ Tdog
There is no way to put “go fuck yourself” politely, Fish sounds like a completely self centered arrogant ignoramus. It’s a real shame his game looks good though, otherwise I would have said goodbye to this blog long ago. Best keep your mouth shut in the future Fish & keep to what you do best.
Now back to the computer & finish the god damn game!

@ Papadopoulos
I see what you did there, not very fair changing my original post from,
“How can I help him? I wish I could. How about some tape for his mouth”
to the edited version you posted,
“How can I help him? I wish I could. But instead i’ll just come here and be a fucking dick.
Wow, maybe i should re-consider how i use my time and energy.
Maybe i *should* go fuck myself.”
Very underhand & a warning to future posters on this blog, your comments may be changed if they do not agree with the staff of Polytron.
July 11th, 2010 at 10:43
Felix Da Mouse Cat is right.
Also, we get your firstborn son.
July 13th, 2010 at 00:43
but felix didnt say dat. Robotochan did. Unless he’s gonna start sock-puppetting.
And considering the commentary previous to the changed statement from Robotochan, he brought it on himself. But hey, it’s the internet. We get to pretend the world revolves around us here.
July 13th, 2010 at 03:50
Just take your time, im sorry im so brainless.
i cant really understand.
im just a consumer, not a creator!
July 13th, 2010 at 10:47
Just for the record, nobody’s sock-puppetting here.

July 17th, 2010 at 01:58
I was so sad when spring 2010 came and went. I’ve been eagerly awaiting Fez’s release but, man, is it killing me. I just kind of wish there was some other positive news other than “it’s still in development and not dead.” =(
July 17th, 2010 at 13:04
“It’s still in development and not dead” is all we need.
Also, love, but that’s kind of unrelated I guess.
July 17th, 2010 at 23:53
and bacon. always need bacon
July 18th, 2010 at 07:03
1. Release it on Steam.
2. Tie it with a promotional fez hat giveaway for Team Fortress 2.
3. Print money.
July 18th, 2010 at 19:09
Tuhd: Of course, how could I, a member of the international bacon fan club, forget that?!
kwyjibo: I’m sure you meant:
3. ???
4. Profit!
July 19th, 2010 at 04:56
Wonder if Fish like bacon.
HEY FISH! DOES YOU LIKE BACON?
July 27th, 2010 at 10:28
Hello Fish,
I hope the game development is on the good slide.
Good luck and I hope to get news about it!

Hi Fish.
I just wanted to say that I’m a bigass faggot who enjoys nothing but sitting around and making pointless arguments in the comment section of a certain website.
That’s all. P.S. I’m gay.
Bye!
