TWO YEARS OF FEZ
(alternate title : TWO YEARS OF FAIL)
Partly inspired by I Get Your Fail, and so you can share with us the pain and pleasure of game development, here’s a collection of 26 chosen Fez development screenshots and fun glitches that occurred during the past two and a half years. In chronological order.

Looking at the rotated shots, I can kind of see why you had to ditch the old gradienty art style. I still think it looked cool in 2d mode though.

I don’t really understand why, care to elaborate?

The gradient shading is a way of faking 3d contours and soft shadows. But when you rotate the image in 3 dimensions, suddenly it just looks like weird tacky wallpaper, because you can see that the contours and shadows aren’t there. The new art style looks consistent between the 2d and 3d views.

well, it’s not the dev blog kinda thing I’d been hoping for, but at least this way I get to see some more in depth stuff of fez
thanks for the vital signs

“21_full.jpg” actually looks pretty cool. Was that unintentional?

Yeah, it was a combination of many glitches with the “screen burn-in” effect of the magenta glowy cave level.
But once we hit the bug we played around with it…

I think that the bilinear filtering + bumpmapping combo in “Renderstate mishap” actually looks really awesome. The texture aliases that cause all of the edges to be shaded a different color fooled me to think that there was some subsurface scattering or global illumination going on there.
You should totally have a level or character that is shaded like that, just to make it look out of place :3
